Japanese black lacquered tiered shelves

These very pretty black lacquered shelves are Japanese and made for the European market probably during the early 1900s. The shelves comprise 4 tiers, the back of the shelf of each tier is fan shaped and decorated with gilded and coloured scenes. The top of each shelf is decorated with Japanese motifs and the tiers graduate from the largest at the bottom to the smallest at the top. There is a scalloped top with a hole in the centre for screwing the shelves to a wall. Highly decorative and useful.
